Equine Canada Competition Results Now Available Online

August 5, 2004

Ottawa, Ontario --- Equine Canada is pleased to report on the early success of the electronic competition results submission process.

The results from over 84 National competitions are already available on the Equine Canada website at: http://results.equinecanada.ca

The discipline of Dressage has a total of 32 competitions and 2,490 results records, while Eventing accounts for 15 competitions and 892 results records, and the discipline of Hunter/Jumper tops the number with 34 competitions and 29,448 results records.

The first results submitted this year were from Dressage competitions in central and western Canada, followed by Eventing competitions in western Canada, and then several high level Hunter/Jumper competitions in central Ontario. This momentum has continued, and Equine Canada has now received a good cross-section of results throughout Canada, including the eastern Provinces.

This is the first season that National competitions are required to submit electronic results in a pre-approved format to Equine Canada.

“I was confident that the competitions would react favorably to the new results submission process,” remarked Craig Collins, Chair of the National Competitions Committee. “All competitors, owners, and show organizers stand to benefit from a standardized results system.”

Equine Canada has developed two programs that allow competitions to meet this requirement: ECRIT (Equine Canada Results Input Tool), and SECRET (Specialized Equine Canada Results Editing Tool).

ECRIT is geared towards the small to mid-sized competitions and enables the competition to download current horse, rider, and class information from the Equine Canada database. It also allows competitions to create entries, print class lists, generate random orders of go, and input results.

SECRET was designed for the larger competitions that use commercial horse show management software. SECRET displays the records within their results file that are missing information, and identifies the passport and sport license numbers that are not an exact match with the EC database.

Some of the commercial horse show packages/competitions that have already adapted their software to meet the specifications of SECRET include: Equestrian Management Group (EMG); Hendervale Equestrian Complex; It’s Show Time!; Jean-Guy Chasle, CMA; Spruce Meadows; and most recently, Fox Village Software.

The feedback from the National competitions on the electronic results submission process continues to be very positive. The competitions are pleased to have a utility that allows them to input their results, and also verify sport license and passport information against the EC database.

Development on ECRIT began in 2002, following recognition of the need for accurate, standardized competition results. ECRIT was launched in 2003, during which time 89 National competitions voluntarily used the program to submit their results.

The online results database also has the ability to link to external pedigree databases.

This relationship has already been established with the Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, and allows individuals to view the pedigree information of the registered Canadian Warmbloods that are listed within the EC results system.

The development of ECRIT was funded through the Horse License fee and matching grants to the Breeds and Industry Division from Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada, while the development of SECRET was funded by Jump Canada.

Equine Canada would like to thank each of the National competitions that used ECRIT in 2003, as well as those that have already submitted their results in 2004. Equine Canada looks forward to working with all National competitions to receive their electronic results in 2004, so that we may preserve and record the efforts of Canada’s equine athletes and partners.
