Drugs Smuggler Convicted

August 2, 2004

Snetterton, Norfolk, UK --- Monday 2nd August, in Canterbury Crown Court, Darren Ralphs was convicted of smuggling 20 kgs of cocaine in a secret compartment hidden in a horsebox.

Ralphs, of Hyde, Cheshire, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

The two horses in the horsebox that was abandoned, with the drugs, at Dover Eastern Docks in September last year, were handed over by HM Customs and Excise to the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses).

At the time Tony Tyler, ILPH Director of UK Operations said, “This is an important milestone for the ILPH and HM Customs and Excise and is an excellent example of inter agency cooperation. As the horses’ future was unsure, I am pleased that we have the space to be able to take them in and care for them.”

Silver Mist a 15 hh grey gelding and Welsh Wonder a 14.2 hh dun gelding are currently progressing through their rehabilitation programme at ILPH Hall Farm Snetterton in Norfolk. Although they will stay in ILPH ownership for the rest of their lives, once they have completed their rehabilitation they will be found suitable loan homes.
