Canadian Team at 2004 World Single Driving Championship Announced
July 6, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario --- The Canadian Team for the 2004 World Singles Driving Championship was announced by Team Coach Chester Weber of Ocala, Florida. The Team will consist of Sue Mott of Angus, Ontario, Courtney MacGillivary of Limehouse, Ontario, and Carole Dailley of Cambridge, Ontario.
The 2004 World Single Driving Championship will be held in Astorp, Sweden on July 21 to 25, 2004. Canada is proud to field a team and looks forward to joining 19 other nations from around the world at this year's World Championship.
Selection was based on performances in qualifying competitions in Canada, the United States, and Europe over the past several months. Weber held training clinics and attended all major competitions with Team Veterinarian, Dr. Bernd Stanglmeier of Utopia, Ontario. These sessions were open to all advanced level drivers hoping to qualify for the team.
“We have great hopes for our Canadian Driving Team this go round in Sweden because of the implementation of Team Coach Chester Weber's long-range development plan for international competition,” remarked Chair of the Drive Canada Competitions Committee, Gaye McLennan. “From all accounts, his tutelage and instruction has resulted in a focused and determined group.”
At an open driver's meeting at the Royal Winter Horse Show last November, all in attendance agreed to Weber's formula for building a national team, finding capable drivers and suitable horses, and working within a plan to achieve the level of performance required for international competition.

Unfortunately, there is no government funding available to non-Olympic sports, thus the drivers themselves raise the money to transport horses to the competition and compete at the event. Donations to assist the Team are gratefully accepted and qualify for tax receipts. Contributions may be sent to Equine Canada - Driving Fund, 200 - 2460 Lancaster Road, Ottawa, Ontario K1B 5S4.
Combined Driving is designed to test the versatility of the horse and driver. It is a three-section competition, A1-Presentation, A2-Dressage, B-Marathon, and C-Cones with each section of the competition looking for a different aspect of the horses training and the driver's ability to work the horse. The combined results of all sections determine the final score for individuals, and the best two scores without elimination are counted from each nation for the team championship.
Drive Canada is member of the Equine Canada family of disciplines and is the National Sport Organization for driving in Canada. Governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership and regional affiliate organizations, Drive Canada provides development programs for coaches and licensed officials, rules for competition, and encourages pleasure and recreational driving through educational seminars and clinics.
