Beth Underhill Jumps to Early Lead in Canadian League World Cup Standings

July 2, 2004

Ottawa, Ontario --- Following the CSI-W International Bromont held in Bromont, Quebec, Beth Underhill of Schomberg, Ontario, has captured the early lead in the Canadian League World Cup Standings.

The International Bromont $60,000 National Bank World Cup Qualifier was held on June 27, 2004, at the historic site of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games equestrian events. Underhill was one of five riders advancing to the jump-off aboard Magdaline, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Darryl B. Williams & Associates Inc. Last to go in the jump-off, Underhill and her speedy mare produced a quick, clean time of 40.20 seconds and received 16 World Cup points for her win.

Eric Lamaze, also Schomberg, Ontario, riding Tempete van het Lindehof, an eight-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Torrey Pines Stables and Ashland Stables Inc., finished in second with a fault-free jump-off effort in a time of 40.49 seconds to earn 13 World Cup points.

In third position with eight points in the Canadian League World Cup standings is Erynn Ballard of Hornby, Ontario, riding Esprit d’Amour, a nine-year-old black Hanoverian stallion owned by Augustin Walch.

Foreign riders Yann Candele of France and Manuel Torres of Colombia also earned points for their efforts in the International Bromont $60,000 National Bank World Cup Qualifier. Candele, a recent competitor at the 2004 World Cup Final in Milan, Italy, collected 11 World Cup points for his third place finish riding Mill Creek Marco Taere. Aboard Tucker Stern’s Matilde Lina, Torres earned nine points for his fifth place finish. Each rider is collecting World Cup points in the hopes of representing their country at the 2005 World Cup Final next April in Las Vegas.

There are still three World Cup Qualifiers still to come on the Canadian circuit, including the upcoming $60,000 Grand Prix Jumping du Quebec World Cup Qualifier at the CSI-W Blainville Jumping International on Sunday, July 11. The top two riders in the Canadian League World Cup standings at the end of the season will be invited to compete in the annual World Cup Final to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, April 20 to 25, 2005.
