Calgary Stampede Hosts Canada’s Largest 4-H Event
May 29, 2008
Calgary, AB --- The Calgary Stampede is proud to host Canada’s largest 4-H event, the 32nd annual Calgary Region 4-H on Parade, from May 30 to June 1 at Stampede Park.
“This is one of our most important youth events,” says Robert Wise, Calgary Stampede agriculture manager. “4-H on Parade continues to grow and we are pleased to sponsor an event that so many in the Calgary Region look forward to all year.”
More than 700 4-H’ers will participate in this year’s event, with more than 1,000 projects ranging from beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, rabbits, agility dogs, sheep and others. This year, for the first time in many years, heavy horses (draft horses) will also be entered. Delegates will compete for best in show and grand champion prizes, but competition isn’t the focus of the weekend.
“4-H itself is an international youth organization dedicated to promoting citizenship, leadership and responsibility,” says Rob Smith, Calgary Regional Specialist, 4-H. “4H on Parade provides our members with the opportunity to live the 4H motto; Learn to do by Doing.”
"4-H on Parade is lots of fun [because] you get to meet kids from everywhere, not just your area," says Jennifer Miller, 4-H participant from Balzac. “It’s a really good way to keep involved in the community and learn life lessons.” Jennifer is in her ninth year of 4-H and an ambassador for the Calgary 4-H Region. She has shown in both the Beef Steer and Beef Female shows in the past, and this year will be competing with her steer. She had the Grand Champion Steer in 2001 and the Reserve Champion Steer in 2003 and 2005.
The weekend culminates in an auction, where participants will sell their prized steer or lamb. Two of these animals have been designated as charity items. Proceeds from the sale of the lamb will go to the Turn on the Tap program with Samaritan’s Purse and proceeds from the sale of the steer will go to the Ronald McDonald House in Southern Alberta.
