Canadian Dressage Riders Compete in California
March 25, 2008
Ottawa, ON --- Canadians riders Leslie Reid and Lorraine Chappell competed at Dressage Affaire CDI3* held March 13-15, 2008 in Del Mar, California.
The competition was an official qualifier for the US Olympic Selection Trials and as a result a number of top US Olympic hopefuls, including Olympians Steffen Peters, Susan Blinks and Leslie Morse, were chasing scores, making it a very competitive field.
Reid, a Canadian Olympian from Langley, BC, rode Patricia Hatch's Orion, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding sired by Jazz, to a fourth place finish with a score of 66.708% in the Grand Prix class. The pair then moved up the scoreboard with a 66.960%, which was good for a third place finish in the Grand Prix Speciale. The top five finishes in both classes indicate that Orion is a definite Grand Prix star in the making as this is his first year competing in the Grand Prix division in CDI competitions.
“I was really happy to have Orion be so consistent at this show, and he was up in the league with the other Grand Prix horses that were there like Ravel (ridden by Steffen Peters) and Mark (now being ridden by Sue Blinks)” noted Reid. “I am going to continue to do all the CDI competitions in California, and I think that he will just get better.”
In the Grand Prix Freestyle, Canadian Equestrian Team Long Listed rider Lorraine Chappell of Aldergrove, BC, and Carpatino, her 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding sired by Carpaccio finished in third place with a score of 64.600%.
The international judging panel at this FEI competition included Canada’s own Cara Whitham, the only judge in the world to hold FEI ‘O’ status for Dressage and Eventing, as well as Gotthilf Riexinger (FEI O—GER), Anne Gribbons (FEI O—USA), Gabriel Martin Armando (FEI C—ARG) and Liselotte Fore (FEI I—USA).
