Arabian splash and Morgan dash at the Sunrise Summer Classic Horse Show at the Princess Louise Park Show Centre in Sussex, New Brunswick
July 15, 2007
Sussex, NB --- Two of the most popular Divisions at the annual Sunrise Summer Classic Horse Show, hosted by the New Brunswick Morgan Horse Club, are the Arabian Mounted Native Costume classes and the timed Morgan Obstacle Driving classes. But, although both divisions provide the splash and dash, they remain serious competition governed by strict rules and criteria.
The Sunrise Summer Classic is unique in that two breeds of horse are featured – the Arabian and the Morgan. Some classes are limited to one breed or the other, while others are combined. This show offers both English and Western mounted classes as well as several carriage driving events.
Prior to Saturday evening’s competition a special ceremony was held honoring the retirement of Hotshot Cross, a chocolate brown Morgan gelding. Hotshot, foaled in 1993, is out of the mare Leahs Matjo Heidi owned by Bill Chamberlain of Cross Creek, New Brunswick, by the sire Merry Sportsman. Purchased as a three-year-old by Wally and Linda Lemmon of Linwal Acres Morgans, he had an illustrious 10-year show career in the region. A versatile horse, he won Western, Hunt Seat and Saddle Seat classes and was also successful in harness. At home he went on trail rides, participated in fun days and demonstrations and served as a lesson horse at riding camps.
Despite being diagnosed, in 2004, as blind in one eye due to a detached retina, Hotshot continued to perform for two more years, winning a Pleasure Driving championship in 2005 and in 2006, under saddle, won seven first place ribbons at that year’s Sunrise Summer Classic. With his many successes at that show, owners Wally and Linda Lemmon felt it was fitting to conduct his retirement ceremony during this year’s show. Hotshot was ridden by Michelle Hodgson of Ben Adhem Arabians in Sussex Corner, NB, for his final demonstration performance. Hodgson had been one of Hotshot’s trainers and rode him to numerous victories over the years.
