Calgary Stampede chuckwagon incident review complete
July 15, 2007
Calgary --- The Calgary Stampede today announced that it has completed its review of the incident that
took place during the seventh heat of the GMC Rangeland Derby on Saturday, July 14. The collision
resulted in the death of three horses and the injury of driver Tyler Helmig.
Stampede officials have announced the suspension of driver Kelly Sutherland from competing in tonight’s
chuckwagon races. The suspension comes as a result of Sutherland’s unsafe driving that contributed to
last night’s tragedy.
“We are proud to present the world’s premier chuckwagon championship. As entertaining as the races are,
our top priority is the safety of everyone involved,” said Lindsey Galloway, senior manager of Corporate
Communications of the Calgary Stampede. “We will not tolerate actions by drivers that compromise the
safety of animals and participants. We will hold all competitors accountable for their actions on the track.”
David Bensmiller will drive Tyler Helmig’s outfit in tonight’s GMC Rangeland Derby.
