Calgary Stampede Recognizes Pioneers of Rodeo
July 9, 2007
Calgary, AB --- The Calgary Stampede presented three outstanding individuals with awards at the Pioneers Luncheon
earlier today.
“The Pioneers luncheon is an opportunity for the Calgary Stampede to recognize members of the community
who have helped raise the profile of the rodeo and chuckwagon races,” said George Brookman, Calgary
Stampede president and chairman of the board. “We salute this year’s recipients for their contributions to our
organization.”
The 2007 Pioneers of Rodeo recipients are:
Malcolm Jones entered his first rodeo at Bassano in 1957 and won the Canadian Championship in 1963, 1964,
1966 and 1967. He served as president of the Canadian Rodeo Cowboy’s Association in 1971 and 1972. Jones
was instrumental in starting the Cowboy’s Disability Fund and laying the groundwork for the first Canadian
Finals Rodeo. Malcolm was honoured as an inductee in the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1999.
Russ Peake was born and raised in Marwayne, AB. Peake covered the Calgary Stampede as a journalist for 39
years on radio and television. He provided listeners with a skilled, polished and knowledgeable account of
rodeo and chuckwagon racing because he truly loves both sports. Peake was inducted into the Alberta Sports
Hall of Fame in 1984.
Hally Walgenbach was one of the greatest champions the sport of chuckwagon racing has ever seen. Born in
Dodsland, SK in 1927, Walgenbach went on to win his first World Chuckwagon Championship in 1953 and 3
World titles between 1959 and 1964. Walgenbach was also a 4-time Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby
Champion. In 1988 he was honoured with the World Professional Chuckwagon Association's Special Tribute
Award. Sadly, Walgenbach passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2007 at the age of 79.
