Jill Henselwood Named CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for June
July 6, 2007
Ottawa, Ontario --- Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, has been selected by Jump Canada as the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for the month of June.
Henselwood's stellar 2007 season has seen her enjoy several Grand Prix victories, represent Canada at the 2007 World Cup Final and, most recently, win the Selection Trials for the Canadian Show Jumping Team heading to the Pan American Games being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 14 to 29.
Having competed in the first two selection trials at the end of May in Palgrave, ON, Henselwood was holding down the fourth and fifth positions with Special Ed and Black Ice respectively in the selection trial standings heading into the final three, which took place in early June during the Spruce Meadows ‘National’ Tournament in Calgary, AB.
With excellent performances aboard both horses at Spruce Meadows, Henselwood moved into first and second positions in the standings heading into the final selection trial. With each rider limited to one mount in the final selection trail, the $200,000 CN Reliability Grand Prix, Henselwood opted for her internationally experienced mount, Special Ed, a 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Juniper Farms. Despite incurring 10 faults over the difficult track that saw just two horses go double clear, Henselwood’s total of 23.486 faults over five Selection Trials put her on top of the Selection Trial standings and earned her a spot on Canada's Pan Am Team.
“Both Special Ed and Black Ice have been on form throughout Spruce Meadows,” commented Henselwood, who previously represented Canada at the 1995 and 1999 Pan American Games. “I am very lucky to have two horses of this caliber.”
Henselwood’s success didn’t stop with the conclusion of the selection trials, as proved by her double win on June 29 during the Spruce Meadows "Canada One" Tournament. Following a trip to the winner’s circle aboard Black Ice, Stacie Ryan’s 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, in the $10,000 WestJet Cup, Henselwood earned a hard-fought victory by 2/10ths of a second with Special Ed in the $60,000 Great-West Life Cup.
As the CAVALOR ‘Athlete of the Month’ for June, Henselwood receives a gift certificate from the title sponsor CAVALOR.
“It’s a real treat to have such a high quality company sponsor this program,” said Henselwood, who is receiving the ‘Athlete of the Month’ award for the fifth time since the program was developed by Jump Canada in 2003. “CAVALOR is a great company and I appreciate their generous sponsorship.”
