Hough and Puff the Fences Stayed Up

July 5, 2007

The sun shining over Spruce Meadows for the second day of the “North American” Tournament was hot with temperatures reaching 30 degrees. The heat did nothing to wilt the day with over 10,000 fans coming to appreciate tremendous show jumping.

The feature event of the evening the Direct Energy Cup took place in the Spruce Meadows International Ring on another demanding course set by Stephen G. Renouard (GBR). With $50,000 in prize money up for grabs each rider attacked the 15 jump course.

Of twenty-eight entries there were four horse/rider combinations to finish the first round clear and earn positions in the jump-off. Eddie Macken (IRL) got things started in the jump-off and finished with four faults. Eric Lamaze followed and was fast, his time looked unbeatable. Of course, Lauren Hough is never one to be counted out. Riding her mare Casadora, Hough edged out Lamaze to claim the victory in the Direct Energy Cup. After her win Hough spoke of what it took to beat Lamaze, “He took every chance. I really had to go. I had to take every chance to beat him. My horse was fantastic.”

Each of the top three in the event departs Spruce Meadows after the “North American” Tournament for the Pan American Games in Brazil.

The top ten for the Direct Energy Cup featured familiar faces and new favourites.(see results below)

Earlier in the evening Canada’s Eric Lamaze jumped to victory in the $35,000 Pengrowth Cup. His victory aboard his 10-year-old mare Narcotique de Muze II carried Lamaze further into an elite group of athletes with Spruce Meadows career earnings in excess of $1 million. Thus far on the Spruce Meadows Summer Tour Lamaze has earned over $100,000, with plenty still available over the final three days.

The feature events for tomorrow at the Spruce Meadows “North American” Tournament are the, $25,000 Pepsi Challenge and the $50,000 Lafarge Cup. Competition gets underway at 5:00 pm in the Spruce Meadows International Ring.
