Spruce Meadows "North American" Wednesday

Lamaze is Hicksteady

Calgary, AB --- The first day of the Spruce Meadows “North American” Tournament was one to remember, with amazing weather, fantastic sport and a Canadian victory. The feature event of the evening was the $30,000 ENERFLEX Cup, held in the Spruce Meadows International Ring.

The competition was tight. Only three made it into the jump-off by conquering the course set by Stephen G. Renouard (GBR). Lisa Silverman was the lone American and she finished the jump-off with 8 faults and a third place. Canadian Keean White rode well enough to place 2ndafter posting a clear round in the jump-off.

Last to go in the jump-off was Canadian super-star Eric Lamaze with his stallion Hickstead. His experience showed as he expertly maneuvered the course finishing over a second faster than White. Of his win Lamaze said, “It’s a great place to win, it’s a good horse to win on. It felt really good.”

A rider didn’t have to jump clear to place in the evening’s competition with 7 riders earning prize money with faults.

Eric Lamaze and Hickstead are heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on July 13th to participate along with team Canada in the Pan American Games. Lamaze will ride his stallion for the last time on the Saturday of the Spruce Meadows “North American” Tournament in the ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup before Hickstead is quarantined in Florida in preparation for the journey to Brazil.

Tomorrow will be another exciting day at Spruce Meadows with the $35,000

Pengrowth Cup and the $50,000 Direct Energy Cup in the International Ring

starting at 5:00 pm.
