Henselwood and Pratt Qualify for 2006 World Cup Final

November 23, 2005

Ottawa, ON --- Jill Henselwood and Chris Pratt closed out the 2005 Canadian World Cup League tied for top spot when the League Final was held Wednesday, November 9, at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON.

Both show jumping athletes came into the final event, the $60,000 CN World Cup Grand Prix, tied for first place with a total of 59 points. Their final Canadian League performances had no impact on their total points, leaving them tied for top spot. As only the top two riders in the Canadian League are invited to the annual World Cup Final, there was no need to break the tie. Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, and Pratt of Belfountain, ON, will both be invited to compete at the 2006 World Cup Final to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from April 26-30.

Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, will be the first alternate after finishing third overall in the Canadian World Cup League standings, helped by 17 World Cup points gained in the League Final. In a competitive jump-off for the $60,000 CN World Cup Grand Prix title, Lamaze and Ashton Farm’s Dutch Warmblood stallion, Hickstead, slipped on a tight turn, losing valuable time on the clock. American challenger McLain Ward and Goldika were able to better Lamaze’s time to take home the victory.

Second alternate will be Ian Millar of Perth, ON, who ended the season with a total of 48 points.

Henselwood had taken the early lead in the 2005 Canadian League World Cup standings following the opening event of the season, the $100,000 CN Performance World Cup Qualifier held at during the Spruce Meadows 'Continental' Tournament, and remained at the top of the leader board throughout the summer. However, following his win in the $100,000 John Deere World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix at the CSI-W Tournament of Champions on September 25 in Palgrave, ON, Pratt moved into the lead. Henselwood evened the score by earning points in the Budweiser Grand Prix de Penn World Cup Qualifier held at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, PA, on October 22.

Canada has claimed the annual World Cup Final on three occasions, setting records in the process. Mario Deslauriers of Bromont, QC, remains the youngest rider to ever win the World Cup Final, claiming victory at the age of 19 in 1984. Ian Millar of Perth, ON and his famous mount, Big Ben, became the first horse-rider combination to win back-to-back World Cup Finals in 1988 and 1989.
