Equestrian Community Suffers Great Loss

SUSAN JANE ANSTEY (1946-2005)

Ottawa, Ontario --- Equine Canada wishes to extend condolences and support to Jennifer, Michael and Susan Jane's family and friends. As a generous industry sponsor, active industry volunteer, and lifetime member of Equine Canada (and the Canadian Equestrian Federation), Susan Jane tirelessly contributed her expertise and resources to supporting the equestrian sport community that she loved.

She was a valiant champion of Canada’s development in international sport. As a long-time supporter of the Canadian Equestrian Team, Susan Jane recognized that the ride to the podium for Canadian competitors begins in the barns and paddocks at home. Amongst her many volunteer and industry sponsorship contributions, she chaired the task force that resulted in the creation of Jump Canada, and established the Horse Sport Young Riders Scholarship Fund in 1998 to recognize the top Canadian performers at the annual North American Young Riders’ Championship in the three Olympic disciplines.

As that rare combination of publisher and working journalist, Susan Jane provided a dedicated Canadian journalistic presence at World Equestrian Games and Olympic Competitions from 1984 through to Greece in 2004. Through her work with the FEI Media Advisory Committee and her leadership of the International Alliance of Equine Journalists, Susan Jane built a bridge that linked Canadian horse sport to the rest of the world.

Through Horse Sport and her industry publications, Susan Jane provided a national voice for the Canadian equestrian community, and a forum for a national dialogue on the issues that have affected and defined our sport for the past thirty years.

A passionate voice for the Canadian community has been silenced. She will be sadly missed ...

SUSAN JANE ANSTEY (1946-2005) 

Susan Jane Anstey (nee Scott) passed away peacefully after a 
short but courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, November 9, 2005, 
at her home, Wyndstone Farm, in Nobleton, Ontario, Canada, with 
Michael and Jennifer by her side.  She is survived by her 
daughter, Jennifer Anstey, her sister, Alice Ferrier, her loving 
partner of 24 years, Michael Van Every, and their families. 

An avid horsewoman, Susan Jane competed and judged 
hunters/jumpers, bred and raced Thoroughbreds, published Canada's 
leading horse magazines including Horse Sport, Horse-Canada and 
Canadian Thoroughbred, and was a life long member of The Toronto 
& North York Hunt.  She made a significant contribution to horse 
sport both nationally and internationally, serving as a director 
of Jump Canada, chair of the Media Advisory Committee of the 
Federation Equestre International (FEI) and, for the last 12 
years, President of the International Alliance of Equestrian 
Journalists. 

A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 14, 2005, at 
1:30 p.m. at the Aurora United Church, 15186 Yonge St. (south of 
Wellington) in Aurora, Ontario.  Donations to the Princess 
Margaret Hospital Foundation or Southlake Regional Health Centre 
Foundation are welcomed.
