Cutting Horse Futurity Horseman’s Market
October 19, 2005
Calgary, AB --- Exclusive to Alberta Equine ...On-Line --- The largest and richest cutting horse futurity in Canada, the Wrangler Cutting Horse Futurity, was held at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede grounds last week.
On the final night of competition, Saturday, October 15, the Futurity Open Finals led to lots of fun at the Horseman’s Market, in the Corral concourse, where added attractions that night was a beer garden as well as entertainment provided by Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee, Ivan Daines.
The crowds of spectators and contestants enjoying the competition took advantage of the concourse filled with booths offering a wide variety of wares and services. A stroll down the crowded area was a treat for any discriminating shopper; there were horse portraits - original fine art paintings and prints making a mini art gallery in the mall. Unusual sculptures, many created from horseshoes, were another attraction. Intricately carved mirrors, picture frames and shelves were on offer, obviously a popular item, as many were already sold!
There were several booths selling custom tack, saddles and chaps. The standard of these beautifully made items was extremely high, with intricate hand-tooled leather, and a variety of horsehair products. In fact, about every item a horse might need could be found on the concourse, from horse trailers to nutrition.
There was plenty on offer for people as well, from handcrafted copper jewelry, buckskin gloves, cute outfits for young people, and really amazing fashions that would stand out in any expensive downtown boutique, yet with the added bonus of reasonable prices for the wide variety of styles on offer. An unusual product, the Urad Fine Italian Leather Cream, had people lined up to get a free high polish on their cowboy boots and shoes, especially that night, after a cow from the competition made it’s escape onto the concourse! (We’re told that the cow’s credit card was denied, so it left the Horseman’s Market and returned to the herd…)
The festivities and shopping went on long after the competition finished that day, a truly unique mixture of dancing, shopping, singing along with Ivan Daines, and lots of tasty popcorn as well as a few beers. The friendly crowds were clearly having a good time – a great way to celebrate another successful Cutting Horse Futurity!
