Canadian Sonya Crampton winner at Morven Park CCI* Three Day Event
October 14, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario --- Sonya Crampton of Victoria, BC brought top honours to Canada by winning Division I of the Morven Park CCI* Three Day Event held in Leesburg Virginia from September 29 - October 2 aboard Gorgeous George, a 17 hand 7 year-old chestnut American Thoroughbred gelding by War Secretary (Secretariat).
Sitting in third place after Dressage, with a penalty score of 53.9 the talented duo went on to capture first place in a field of 37 competitors by putting in a double clear performance over American Tremaine Coopers Cross Country course and a textbook performance in Show Jumping. However it was her dressage score that ensured her win since the final top three all finished on their dressage scores.
Gorgeous George is owned by Nancy Kilcrease of Florida and North Slope Division, BC. He is extremely athletic. True to his bloodlines, he has an excellent gallop and also has a fancy trot. He is brave cross country, a quick learner and a real showman.
One month prior to the competition, Crampton had told her coach, David OConner that she would win this event; "It was my first time feeling confident at a three day event . I have had six wins this season, and in addition to the confidence and experience gained from this, David was very encouraging and he really pumped me up as I left the start box".
In honour of Crampton's win, tribute was paid to the Canadian flag and anthem. For Crampton, 34, who has been based out of Virginia since she left BC 8 years-ago, this was an emotional moment; "Hearing the anthem brought tears to my eyes. Fellow competitors showed their support by commenting how nice it was to hear the Canadian anthem!"
In addition to Cramptons success in the CCI* Division I , Anna Thompson of Alymer, QC finished her first CCI in 14th position (81.10 penalty points) aboard her own 10 year-old 15.3hh chestnut Thoroughbred mare, Corbally Lass.
In the Advanced Horse Trials Division II, Canada was yet again put on the map with two top finishes from Canadian riders. Mark Nelson of Ashton, ON, finished in third place (57.20 points), riding Ruth Allums 9 year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Power of 2. In fifth position with a total score of 63.20 was Pascale Tremblay-Wagner of Mont St-Hilaire, QC on her own 12 year-old grey Belgian bred gelding, Fliper des Rollees. The winner of this division was Australia's Phillip Dutton on Le Samurai.
The Olympic sport of Eventing encompasses three separate tests: dressage, cross-country, and jumping - held consecutively. Each test ridden by the rider/horse combination is scored individually, but added together for the final results. The rider/horse combination with the fewest number of penalty points over the three days wins the competition.
Canadian Eventing is a committee of Equine Canada responsible for the sport of eventing in Canada from the grassroots to the international level.
