Strength in Numbers - Bright Future for Canadian Teams

July 22, 2005

Ottawa, Ontario --- Equine Canada (EC) is pleased to announce the creation of the Canadian Equestrian Team Committee, formed as a collective representation for all FEI disciplines under the EC umbrella: Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Jumping, Para-Equestrian, Reining and Vaulting.

The driving force behind this committee is the need to recognize that the above sport disciplines can and need to work together as one unified voice in order for Canadian Equestrian Team (CET) riders to reach their full potential. With individual sport preferences left aside, standing together as a united team will clearly result in a stronger Team Canada.

“We have some exceptionally talented athletes and it’s extremely important that the Canadian Equestrian Team receives recognition within the country,” commented committee chair, Kim Goodyear.

Goodyear further explained that the CET Committee’s main concerns are to create CET recognition within the general public and to fundraise on behalf of the numerous teams. More specifically, the committee aims to provide the financial support required to conduct high performance training to enable Team Canada to become and remain a powerful force on the international scene.

Integral to the success of the fundraising initiatives is the re-establishment of the CET brand, and the tradition of excellence that it represents. The CET logo is symbolic of the unique partnerships that exist between leading Canadian equestrians and their equine athletes; partnerships that denote dedication and success at the highest levels of competition.

The first financial hurdle to clear is funding for Canadian representatives at the World Equestrian Games to be held in Aachen, Germany in August 2006. Travel expenses and entry fees alone will run each horse/rider combination approximately $25,000. Considering that 20-28 horses will travel to Aachen, it will take some time before the Committee will be able to offer further financial support in the form of coaching and assisting in the upkeep and maintenance of our present equine athletes. Ultimately, the committee hopes to render support through the purchase of world class horses for Canada.

Everyone is invited to support an exciting new initiative “Any Swing Goes,” the first in a series of fundraisers organized by the CET Committee. This ballroom gala will take place on Saturday, Nov 19, 2005 at the Renaissance Toronto Airport Hotel. Guests will enjoy an exquisite dinner, followed by an evening of dancing to a live 18-piece swing band. A silent auction will add to the festivities.

“The proceeds will help support our athletes in their pursuit of excellence, namely the 2006 World Equestrian Games,” added Goodyear.

A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
