Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta --- On a sunny afternoon in Calgary, the action became heated in the Pepsi Challenge (1.45m) event held in the International Ring when Richard Spooner (USA) managed to beat Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) on both of the Athens Olympic gold medalist's mounts.

"I had to go as fast as I possibly could," said Spooner, knowing of the fast riders still to go in the order.

"He's a bit tricky to ride ... and now I don't know how to slow him down," explained Spooner of his Oldenburg gelding, Quirino 3.

They returned to the nine-horse jump-off between both of Pessoa's mounts and was able to hold on to the lead in a time of 35.30. Pessoa finished second and third aboard Sigane van de Grundeval and Cantate respectively. Ian Millar (CAN) and Redefin were fourth.

The Americans dominated again following Thursday night's double win when Beezie Madden (USA) won the second feature competition, the Lafarge Cup (1.50m). Six out of the 49- horse field went clear in the first round to advance to the jump-off. Madden and Judgement had the advantageous position of going last and knew just what she had to do.

"I thought I could beat Nick," said Madden. She was very happy with the Dutch stallion who she said was an angel to handle.

Nick Skelton and Pandur 292 finished second while another US rider, Lauren Hough and Casadora were third.

Heading into the final weekend of the Summer Tour, all horses and riders are in top form. Markus Beerbaum is still leading the Spruce Meadows North American Championship as neither event tonight contributed points.

The Canada Post Cup starts Saturday's action at 10:00 am on the International Ring. The prestigious ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup will begin at 2:00 pm and will also be seen in front of a live CBC Sports television audience.
