Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta --- Two American riders prevented another Brazilian double win tonight when McLain Ward (USA) aboard Goldika 559 beat out Brazilian star Rodrigo Pessoa in the Zeidler Financial Cup (1.50m) and Norman Dello Joio (USA) aboard Glasgow snatched the win from last night's big winner Bernardo Alves in the Direct Energy Business Services Cup (1.60m).

"I didn't watch Bernardo but I wanted to have a blowout before Saturday," commented Dello Joio on his win. "He (Glasgow) knows this field, he's been here a number of times and I'm very encouraged about the weekend."

Dello Joio picked up $17,000 for the win, Alves and Canturo won $10,000 for their second place finish and Rich Fellers on McGuiness were third for $5,000.

There were eight in the jump-off in the Zeidler Financial Cup (1.50m) and Pessoa and Loriot were leading the competition with a time of 40.86. He was followed closely behind by his wife Keri on Harry Potter before Ward came in and bested them both by more than a second, bumping them down to second and third respectively.

Ward has had a very successful 2005 Summer Tour at Spruce Meadows with two wins in the first couple weeks of competition. "It's always nice to win here, the horses have been great," said Ward. "Goldika is a very fast, experienced mare."

Top Canadian was Jonathan Asselin of Calgary and Luxgood who finished with one rail down in the jump-off in a time of 44.17.

At the completion of tonight's competition, German rider Markus Beerbaum and Constantin are leading the Spruce Meadows North American ChampionshipT, followed by Laura Kraut (USA) riding Miss Independent and Geir Gulliksen (NOR) aboard Love Z.

The ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup on Saturday and Chrysler Classic Sunday afternoon will contribute maximum points toward this overall Championship.
