Kubota Cup Canadian Show Jumping Series Comes to Ottawa
July 4, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario --- The National show jumping series that has already captured the imagination of Western Canada is set to begin its Eastern Division tour with a stop in Ottawa. The ‘Kubota’ Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament will host the $65,000 Kubota Cup Big Ben Memorial Grand Prix on July 17, where Canada’s top show jumping riders and local grand prix talent, as well as the riders and horses who are future Canadian Olympians, will be vying for a portion of the purse.
The seven-city Canadian Show Jumping Series, the subject of a 13-part television series that will air on the Global national television network beginning in September, spans the country from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast. It has been made possible through a multi-year commitment from Kubota Canada Ltd.. Up for grabs in this inaugural year is a total $385,000 in prize money. A Crystal Trophy and a new Kubota RTV 900 Utility Vehicle will be awarded to the Western Kubota Cup Champion in Richmond, BC August 14 and to the Eastern Kubota Cup Champion in Halifax October 15. The top riders from both divisions will meet at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair November 5 where a Kubota Cup Canadian Show Jumping Series National Champion will be crowned and another $65,000 in prize money and incentives will be disbursed.
The Kubota Capital Classic Show Jumping Tournament, one of Canadian show jumping’s premiere venues, is a natural launching point for the Kubota Cup Eastern Championship series. “We’re looking forward to Ottawa,” says Kubota Canada’s National Marketing Manager, John Gilliland. “Being the Capital of Canada, it’s a great place to start. I’m interested to see which riders and horses are going to be the top ten or 15 in the first round. Any one of the top 25 over the series of four events could win.”
Kubota is the presenting sponsor of the Grand Prix that carries the name of Ian Millar’s famous horse, Big Ben. Millar, an eight-time Olympian and spokesperson for the Kubota Cup Series, is based in Perth, less than an hour away from the Capital Classic. Kubota is a perfect fit with show jumping, he says. “There are parallel demographics with horse people and Kubota. We need the equipment for both our farming and landscaping needs. And there is no better equipment on the market for that than Kubota equipment.”
The production crew from Generator Productions will be on site as they continue to delve into the behind-the-scenes stories of show jumping and its riders, horses and other personalities. The Series’ theme song, “Along For The Ride”, was written by Jon Van Wingerdon (from Perth) and is included on a new album by fresh Canadian singing talent Craig McIntyre (also an Ottawa-area boy). They will be performing at various Kubota Cup events during the week.
The next stop for the Kubota Cup on the Eastern circuit is in at the Kubota Bromont International Horse Show July 30, followed by the Kubota Collingwood Classic August 21, the last stop before the Eastern Championship Final at the Maritime Winter Fair in Halifax.
