Shannon Dueck and Korona Second in Grand Prix Freestyle at Raleigh CDI3*

July 4, 2005

Ottawa, Ontario --- Canada’s Shannon Dueck rode to a second place finish in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the Raleigh CDI 3* held June 3-5, 2005 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

With her longtime partner Korona, a 17hh Dutch Warmblood gelding, Dueck was awarded a score of 71.28 per cent from the panel of five international judges, which included Canadian judge Joan Macartney (FEI I).

In the previous day’s competition, Dueck and Korona rode to a fifth place finish (64.500 per cent) in the Grand Prix among a field of 17 competitors.

"I have never been to Raleigh before and was really pleasantly surprised with the quality of the competition, including the other competitors, stabling, rings and management," said Dueck. "Korona felt the excitement of the ring, and although our Grand Prix was mistake free and quite brilliant, tension caused a few ‘rough around the edges’ moments. We were both settled more for the freestyle, so Kees was able to show his brilliance off with a mistake free and harmonious performance."

Both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle classes were held in the evening which made for increased spectators and excitement in the air. Dueck describes her Freestyle music, created by Canadian Karen Robinson of Applause Dressage as "classical done with a techno touch.”

Dueck's next competition will be in August where she will compete in Canada's third CDI3* of the season, the Toronto Summer Classic, being held August 4-7 at the Royal Canadian Riding Academy in Cedar Valley, ON.

"I am really looking forward to (this competition) as I haven't competed in Canada since the Royal Winter Fair in 2002!" she noted.

Dueck first rose to international prominence with Korona in 1999 when they won Individual Silver at the Pan American Games held in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They went on to win numerous CDI competitions at the Grand Prix level before finished as the highest placed Canadians at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Spain. The pair have also captured the Canadian League World Cup Series, and have represented Canada at the World Cup Finals.
