Jump Canada Announces 2005 FEI Children’s Jumper Final Qualifiers

April 21, 2005

Ottawa, Ontario --- Jump Canada is pleased to announce that Canada will host two qualifying competitions for the 2005 FEI Children’s Jumper Finals to be held November 22 to 27 at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley, California.

The Eastern Canadian Qualifier will be held July 1 at the Cornerstone Horse Show running June 29-July 3 at the Barrie Event Centre in Barrie, Ontario. The Western Qualifier will take place on June 26 at the Chinook Arch Summer Classic Horse Show held June 23-26 in Dewinton, Alberta.

The FEI Children’s Final is open to show jumping competitors aged 12 to 14. The competition was created to promote and encourage talented young riders by giving them the opportunity to experience international competition with support from the FEI.

The Qualifiers require participants to ride their own horse or pony over four courses, at a maximum height of 1.20m and maximum width of 1.30m. The courses, which are pre-determined and published by the FEI, are built to the exact specifications of the course plan. The FEI tabulates results from all competitions, and extends invitations accordingly. Each country is represented by a maximum of two riders with the exception of the host country, who is entitled to have a number of competitors equal to the number of foreign entries. Riders compete on borrowed horses, supplied by the host country.

Canadian riders have enjoyed great success at the FEI Children’s Final in the recent past. At the 2002 FEI Children’s Final in Brazil, Waylon Roberts of Port Perry, ON, captured the Gold Medal in the team competition. In 2003 at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, AB, when Canada was the host nation, Femke van den Bosch of Red Deer, AB, was the top-placed Canadian rider, finishing second aboard the Dutch Warmblood mare, Lastara. Amanda Knowles of Toronto, ON, placed fifth riding her Belgian-bred gelding, Robin van het Lindehof.

At the 2004 FEI Children’s Final, also held at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch, Knowles was the only two-time competitor, finishing second overall in the Farewell competition on the borrowed Holsteiner gelding, Houdini. Calgary native Lisa Narraway rode the Dutch Warmblood mare, Genoa, to a third place finish just behind Knowles.
